Similar to most photographers, we have lots of stories behind our images and can recall many amusing moments in our scramble for the best shot. Recently, we went on a camping trip in northern Ontario. We packed our cameras, lenses, and gear because we’re always on the lookout for special photo opportunities.
We went canoeing one evening in hopes of spotting a moose. I’ve never seen one up close and, fingers crossed, wanted to take some photos. Long story short – no moose. However, when I returned from the trip and was looking through the magnified images in my photo editing software, I spotted a moose swimming in the background behind our canoes! You could see its big head and antlers in several shots as he swam by us.
A missed moose moment! If you look closely at the photo above, you may spot the moose swimming through the calm water, with the trail of moving water left behind. Here’s a blown up version of the photo, with the moose circled in white.
Of course, safety’s always first and if we’d noticed him, we wouldn’t have gotten too close, but our long lenses would’ve done the trick. The sun was setting, it was getting dark, and we missed him. Fortunately, we had a lot of luck finding and photographing bears in the wilderness and other wildlife on our trip to Alberta.
In the meantime, I’m still on the lookout for my fabulous moose shot. Have you had any missed moments or interesting stories behind your photos? Leave us a comment below with your memorable photography experiences.
